What is Chinese New Year?
The Chinese New Year has its origins in the legend of the human-eating monster Nian that has to be chased away with loud sounds and the color red.
The Chinese New Year is based on the ancient legend of the monster Nian that appears at the transition from the old to the New Year and can only be chased away with the help of loud noise and the color red. The Chinese New Year is therefore traditionally celebrated with dragon dances, lion dances, drums and fireworks. The tall dragon dancing through the streets symbolically dispels evil spirits. The lion dance is to ask for prosperity and happiness. The fireworks and the drums chase away the evil spirits with their loud sound.
